Pittsburgh Family Photographers | Planning Guide

So you’ve done your research for Pittsburgh family photographers, narrowed down your search, and are now ready to move forward in planning your session. Lets face it, planning a family photo session can be challenging. Not to worry, I’m here to offer some helpful advice to kickoff the planning process. I’ve been a Pittsburgh family photographer for over a decade and i’ve learned that one of the most challenging aspects of family photography is just getting your family ready as well as showing up on time to your session. Below is my Pittsburgh Family Photography guide I put together to hopefully make your planning process easier.

Pre-Session Checklist

Plan your outfits in advance. You’ll thank yourself later. Waking up on the day feeling chill and prepared is the goal. If you’re stuck on what to wear, please don’t hesitate to let me know and I can offer advice.

Thinking about any props, speciality items, or specific shots you’d like? Some families blankets or personalized keepsakes. If you’ve got something specific in mind, feel free to let me know. Happy to Collaborate!

Give your kids a heads-up in a relaxed way. Tell them you’re heading to the park for some fun! Keep it light and fun, especially if your little one(s) are on the shy side. It tends to work wonders.

To Pack For Your Session

Personal touch-up items like lipstick or a hairbrush; always good to have close by.

Snacks galore! They are a secret weapon on family photography sessions. Wait to pull them out until the kids start to lose attention or start feeling tired. Just make sure the snacks won’t leave colorful marks on lips or fingers.

Comfy, walkable shoes are a must. We might venture on some unpaved trails, maybe even tackle a few hills. If you’re a die-hard fan of your wedges, bring ’em along to change into before we kick off the shoot.

A backup plan for the kiddos, in case they decide to unexpectedly get dirty. Aside from the photos, muddy & dirty might not go well on the ride home. So, consider packing spare clothes, shoes, and a towel just in case.

How To Dress

Dress for the weather! Feeling cozy and comfy throughout your Pittsburgh family photography session will pave the way for more photogenic shots.

The trend of matching outfits is gone! Instead, go for colors that go well together, like earthy tones and neutrals.

Keep it casual, no tennis shoes, T-shirts, or tees with slogans.

Moms – consider rocking medium or long dresses instead of pants. They catch movement and look fabulous in photos. Short dresses might be tricky during seated shots, so keep that in mind.

Dads – don’t forget to empty those pockets of bulky stuff like phones and keys before we start snapping away.

Choose comfy clothes & shoes. We’re gonna be on the move throughout our session together!

How to Pose

I’m all about capturing those genuine, unposed moments. No need to coax your kids into fake smiles; I’ll work on pulling the real deal outta them.

Speaking of kids, those little ones aged 5-10 might try to “cheese” because it’s what they’ve learned. Help out by goofing around and playing with them to create those candid shots.

Get ready to laugh, play, tickle, and snuggle. That’s how we’ll catch the authentic moments that matter.

Not everyone needs to give the camera their full attention. Dads, focus on your partner and kids, that’s the vibe.

Chill out, take it slow, and let things flow naturally. No need to stress about making everything perfect. Just be in the moment with your family, and I’ll handle the rest. If the kiddos get a bit fussy, don’t sweat it. Just snuggle ’em up!

Expect me to shuffle you around to different spots for a variety of shots. The more diversity we get, the bigger your gallery and the more fantastic photos we can create together. It’s all part of the fun!

What Happens Next?

After the session, I’ll be working my magic behind the scenes. I’ll sift through all the photos, minimizing duplicates, blurs, or those pesky blink shots. Typically, your gallery will be good to go within 2-3 weeks of the session. If you do need a few photos asap for a photo Christmas card don’t hesitate to let me know. I will be providing you with a flash drive containing your session photos (full resolution, watermark free) along with a print certificate card, granting you unlimited printing rights.

Finally, ENJOY YOUR PHOTOS! I’m all about turning those digital gems into printed art because that way, you can admire them in your home every single day. Share them with your friends and family so that they’re not just collecting cobwebs on your computer.

That’s a wrap, folks! You’ve got the whole scoop on what’s in store after your family photography session. Thanks a million for choosing me as your trusted Pittsburgh family photographer. I’m super excited to shower your family with love and leave you with stunning artwork that’ll stand the test of time.

So this was my checklist for guiding you & your family through the family photography process. Thank you for choosing me to be your Pittsburgh family photographer. I can’t wait to create your family portraits.
